I've always loved writing. As a little girl, I'd eagerly fill up “exercise books” with my thoughts. While I can't pinpoint what I scribbled down back then, my parents often said I had a vivid imagination.

Fast forward to high school and college, my favorite subject was English Composition/Essay Writing. On one occasion, my 19-page Psychology paper turned into 35 pages! I took a chance and shared my research as a story. To my surprise, it was well-received, even landing me an “A.” Why am I telling you this?

Writing From Heart to Paper

Because like many of you, I've always found writing to be a comforting outlet. As Brené Brown rightly said being vulnerable in our writing “… is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.” Now, does this make me an expert writer? Not necessarily. But taking my writing from heart to paper taught me the value of writing in understanding oneself and for emotional clarity and growth.

Have you ever felt like you were on an emotional roller coaster? We've all been there. What is your go-to tool? For many others and for me, that tool is writing. Many, including seasoned business owners and professionals, turn to the humble pen and paper for clarity and solace. Or even the keyboard and paper.

Finding Our Way Through Emotions: A Simple Guide

Name It: Start by recognizing what you're feeling. It's the first step to understanding your emotions.

Step Back: When we're too close to a situation, everything can feel like a blur. Taking a breather and looking at things from a distance can give us a clearer perspective.

Accept and Let Go: It's okay to feel what we feel. By acknowledging our emotions, we can begin to move past them. Like Brené Brown once said, "Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it."

Dig Deeper: It’s important that we understand what triggers these emotions and how we react to them. It's an essential step in gaining clarity.

Grow From It: After some reflection, we can use our insights to develop better responses and approaches in the future.

Stay on Track: Good habits take time to form. Keep reminding yourself of how far you've come and the positive changes you've made.

The Beauty of Writing

As I mentioned earlier when you’re feeling blue or overwhelmed, writing can be your safe haven.

Imagine going back to a cherished memory. Immerse yourself in the warmth and joy of that moment. Write it down. Add details. Who were you with? What were you doing? Why was it special? This written memory can serve as a personal anchor on those tough days.

Taking this journey through writing helps us see ourselves better. We get to understand our emotions, reactions, and the reasons behind them. Plus, it's a great way to see how much we've grown over time.

Ultimately, writing isn't just about putting words on paper. It's a path to understanding, growth, and resilience. So, next time you're grappling with your feelings, give writing a try. Take it from heart to paper. It might just be the balm you need.
